Navien specialises in condensing tankless water heaters and combi boilers. They are efficient units, but they depend on clean heat exchangers, so hard water areas need descaling on a regular schedule.

Because these units are installed across a wide range of Ontario homes, we see them in very different conditions. A water heater in a century home with galvanized supply lines behaves differently from the same unit in a fifteen-year-old subdivision build with PEX throughout.

Much of Ontario has moderately hard to very hard water, and that single factor shapes the service life of most plumbing equipment. Scale coats heat exchangers and elements, blocks aerators and small orifices, and shortens the life of cartridges, valve seats and seals. A water heater in a hard water home simply needs more attention than the same unit on softened supply.

Sediment is the other half of the problem. Fine grit from municipal work, older galvanized lines or well supply collects in tanks, strainers and valve bodies. It shows up as noise, reduced flow, weeping valves and premature component failure, and it is largely preventable with routine flushing and the right filtration.

Fixing the component without addressing the water that destroyed it is a short-term result, so we look at both.

A large share of plumbing faults are pressure problems in disguise. Municipal supply in parts of Ontario runs high enough to stress fixtures, appliance valves and joints, which is why a pressure reducing valve and a correctly sized expansion tank matter. Where pressure is too low, the cause is usually a partially closed valve, a corroded section of supply pipe or a fouled filter rather than the fixture the homeowner noticed.

Safety devices deserve the same attention. Temperature and pressure relief valves, backflow preventers, backwater valves and shut-offs are the parts that limit damage when something else fails, and they are often the parts nobody has tested in years. We check them as part of a service visit and flag anything that would not do its job.

If a Navien unit is discharging water, tripping repeatedly, or showing signs of overheating, shut off the supply to it and call us. Those symptoms usually mean a control or safety component is no longer doing what it should.

A Navien unit within its normal service life and otherwise in good condition is almost always worth repairing. Repair cost is usually a fraction of replacement, and a properly repaired unit should give many more years of reliable service.

Parts availability depends on the model and its age. For discontinued Navien components we look at approved equivalents where they exist and are safe to fit; where they do not, we explain the limitation rather than fitting something that was never intended for the equipment.

If replacement is the better route, we can quote suitable new equipment and the work that goes with it, including any pipework, venting, drainage or code upgrades required. You are never obliged to take that route, and the assessment is the same either way.

Annual service is the cheapest work we do and it prevents most of the expensive work. Flushing a tank, descaling a heat exchanger, testing safety valves, checking for early leaks and verifying pressure takes a fraction of the time an emergency call does, and it is scheduled at your convenience rather than on the coldest night of the year.

Timing helps. Water heaters, boilers and hydronic systems are best serviced in late summer or early autumn, sump pumps before the spring thaw, and backflow devices on their required annual test schedule. Households with hard water, high demand or well supply benefit from more frequent attention.

Between visits, watch for changes: new noises, slower drains, weaker flow, staining around fittings or a small puddle that keeps returning. Those small changes are usually the first warning of something worth looking at while it is still inexpensive.

Most residential visits take one to three hours depending on the component involved and how accessible it is. Straightforward cartridge, valve or thermostat replacements are often finished in under an hour. Tank swaps, pump replacements and repiping work take longer and are scheduled separately.
