Hard Water in Ontario: Testing, Softeners and Filtration
Most of southern Ontario sits on limestone, so the water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. That scale shortens the life of water heaters, tankless units, fixtures and appliances unless it is treated.
Hard water is not a health problem, it is an equipment problem. It shows up as spotted glassware, scale on the kettle, soap that will not lather, stiff laundry and a water heater that gets noisier every year.
This guide explains how to find out what is actually in your water, and which equipment addresses which problem.
What hard water costs you
- Scale on the water heater element or heat exchanger, cutting efficiency every year
- Tankless units that error out or need frequent descaling
- Clogged aerators, shower heads and cartridge valves
- Shorter life on dishwashers, washing machines and ice makers
- More soap, detergent and cleaning product used for the same result
- Restricted flow in older supply pipes as scale narrows the bore
Testing before you buy anything
A proper water test measures hardness in grains per gallon, plus iron, manganese, sulphur, pH and, on a private well, bacteria and nitrates. That result determines the equipment, not a sales estimate at the door.
Municipal and well supplies need different approaches. A well can also change through the year, so retesting after heavy spring runoff is worthwhile.
Matching equipment to the problem
- Hardness and scale: an ion-exchange water softener sized to your hardness and household demand
- Rust staining and metallic taste: an iron filter ahead of the softener
- Rotten-egg smell: sulphur treatment or oxidising filtration
- Sediment and cloudiness: a whole-house sediment filter as the first stage
- Chlorine taste and odour: carbon filtration
- Drinking water quality: reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink
- Well bacteria risk: ultraviolet purification after filtration
