Sewer Line Repair in Ontario: Trenchless vs Excavation
Repair cost depends on the length and depth of the run, the pipe material, whether the damage is a crack, a root intrusion or a collapse, and whether the line can be lined from inside or has to be dug up.
The sewer lateral carries everything out of the house to the municipal main. In older Ontario neighbourhoods it is often clay or cast iron, and after decades of root pressure, ground movement and scale it starts to fail.

Signs a sewer line needs attention
- Repeat main-line blockages despite recent cleaning
- Several fixtures backing up at once, especially the basement floor drain
- Gurgling toilets when the washing machine drains
- Sewer odour indoors or a soft, unusually green patch in the yard
- Sunken ground or settling along the run to the street
- Camera footage showing offset joints, root masses or a collapsed section
The repair options
- Cured-in-place lining: a resin liner cured inside the existing pipe, no trench along the run
- Pipe bursting: the old pipe is split outward while a new one is pulled through behind it
- Spot repair: a single failed joint or short section replaced through a small excavation
- Full open-cut replacement: used where the line has collapsed, changed grade or needs re-routing
What drives the cost
- Length of the lateral and its depth below grade
- What sits above the run: driveway, mature trees, patio, sidewalk or city boulevard
- Whether access pits can be placed at both ends for a trenchless method
- Municipal permits, road-cut approvals and inspection requirements
- Restoration: concrete, asphalt, landscaping and interior floor work
- Whether a backwater valve or new cleanout is added at the same time
