How to Stop Your Ontario Basement Flooding
Most Ontario basement flooding comes from one of three sources: a failed or undersized sump pump, a sewer backup through the floor drain, or surface water finding its way in. Each has a different fix.
Ontario now gets more intense summer downpours than the storm systems in many older neighbourhoods were designed for. When the ground is saturated and the municipal sewer surcharges, whatever is protecting your basement gets tested all at once.
This guide covers the protection that actually works, in the order most homes should do it.
Where the water comes from
- Sump pump failure: worn pump, stuck float, blocked discharge or a power cut during the storm
- Sewer backup: the municipal line surcharges and pushes back through the floor drain
- Foundation seepage: cracks and failed weeping tile under sustained groundwater
- Surface water: downspouts, window wells and grading directing runoff at the wall
- Burst supply pipe: unrelated to weather, and the reason a main shut-off valve matters
The protection that works
- A correctly sized sump pump with a sealed pit and a check valve on the discharge
- A battery backup or second pump so an outage during a storm is not a flood
- A backwater valve on the main drain to stop sewer surcharge entering the house
- Downspouts discharged well away from the foundation, never into the weeping tile
- A tested main water shut-off and, ideally, an automatic leak-detecting shut-off
- An annual check of the pump, float, discharge line and floor drain before spring
Subsidies and insurance
Many Ontario municipalities offer basement flooding protection subsidies covering part of the cost of a backwater valve, sump pump or downspout disconnection. Programs usually require a licensed plumber, a permit and an inspection, so the paperwork is arranged before work starts.
Insurers increasingly ask whether a backwater valve is fitted, and some price sewer backup coverage accordingly. It is worth asking your broker before deciding.
