Water Heater Replacement Cost in Ontario
Replacement cost is driven by the type and size of the unit, gas or electric, the venting arrangement, and whether the existing water, gas and drainage connections need bringing up to current code.

What a replacement includes
- Draining, disconnecting and removing the old unit
- Setting the new tank or mounting the tankless unit
- New water connections, shut-off valve and expansion tank where required
- Gas line and venting connection, or the electrical connection on electric units
- A new temperature and pressure relief valve with a proper discharge line
- Commissioning, leak testing and safe disposal of the old unit
What changes the price
- Capacity and recovery rate: a 40-gallon and a 75-gallon are different jobs
- Fuel: gas units need venting and gas work, electric units may need a circuit upgrade
- Tankless conversions usually need a larger gas line and new venting through the wall
- Access: tight basements, crawl spaces and stair carries add labour
- Code upgrades: expansion tank, drain pan, seismic-style strapping, relief line routing
- Rental buyout or removal coordination if the existing tank is on a contract
Tank versus tankless in an Ontario home
A tank is cheaper to install, simple to service and fine for most households. It stores hot water, so it can run out during back-to-back showers and it stands by losing heat all day.
Tankless costs more up front, especially on a first conversion, but it delivers continuous hot water, frees up floor space and lasts longer when it is descaled annually. Ontario's hard water makes that annual flush non-negotiable.
